A Florida couple is behind bars after starving their 11-month-old baby to death, according to an arrest affidavit.
Investigators say that officers with the Leesburg Police Department responded to a residence on Pine Street in Leesburg for an infant not breathing.
Police conducted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful, and the infant was pronounced dead.
According to the affidavit, the baby was covered in dirt and dried feces, and her skin color was not visible to investigators.
Police say the baby’s eyes were sunken in and the infant was underweight.
The police affidavit described the home as “deplorable” and said that there was an “overwhelming odor of garbage and rotting food” and stated the house was extremely “cluttered and dirty” with holes in the wall from being punched.
The child’s parents, Mark Brittian and Margaret Lehman, told authorities that the baby had a fever and was being treated with Tylenol and refused a bottle and skipped meals.
After being turned over to the Medical Examiner, no signs of trauma were found on the child’s body and only a scant amount of food was discovered in the baby’s stomach. The Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death was extreme malnutrition and starvation.
Lehman and Brittian were arrested and charged with Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child and booked into the Lake County Jail.
