For the first time in 45 years, the Hyde Amendment is not part of a House spending bill, suggesting that congressional Democrats seek to pave the way for taxpayer-funded abortions.
The U.S. House Appropriations Committee on Thursday passed the 2022 spending bill affecting the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and other agencies on a 33-25 vote without including the amendment. The spending bill now goes to the House floor for final approval.
The Hyde Amendment, named for former Republican Congressman Henry Hyde of Illinois, precludes taxpayer funding of abortions, except in cases of rape or incest, which make up a tiny fraction of terminated pregnancies. The Hyde Amendment was first adopted in 1976, and until recently, enjoyed bipartisan support, including from Joe Biden before he became president.
According to CNSNews.com, 200 Republicans – almost the entire GOP House caucus, and all Florida Republicans – have pledged to reject legislation that does not include the Hyde Amendment.
In a letter in January to Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Republican lawmakers argued that “As part of their pro-abortion crusade, Democrats have taken direct aim at these long-standing, bipartisan protections that generally prevent the federal government from using taxpayer dollars to support abortion procedures.”
“Years of public polling indicates that repealing the Hyde Amendment is opposed by most of the American public,” the letter continued. “Congressional Democrats now seek to further erode public trust in government by ignoring mainstream public opinion in favor of placating the radical Left.”
“The Hyde Amendment alone has saved the lives of over 2 million innocent babies and continues to protect the conscience rights of a vast majority of Americans opposed to publicly funded abortions,” the GOP signers maintained.
“We cannot allow the Hyde Amendment and other important pro-life safeguards to be decimated by Congressional Democrats. Accordingly, we pledge to vote against any government funding bill that eliminates or weakens the Hyde Amendment or other current-law, pro-life appropriations provisions.”
CNSNews.com noted that the Guttmacher Institute, a liberal pro-choice abortion research outfit, said in a tweet, “For decades, the harm of the #HydeAmendment and other abortion coverage bans has fallen hardest on Black, Indigenous and other people of color working to make ends meet. Ending Hyde is a matter of economic and racial justice.”
This is an odd argument, suggesting that it’s “racist” to encourage black mothers and those of other minorities to give birth, or at least to not force anti-abortion taxpayers to participate in the killing of unborn babies.
Someone, perhaps, should point out that Planned Parenthood, the leading abortion provider in America and one group that would stand to benefit handsomely from the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, sets up most of its abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods, which reflects the eugenics mindset of founder Margaret Sanger.
