A coalition of national Democratic committees are launching a tour to host town hall meetings with voters in Republican-held districts across the U.S.

The tour, titled “People’s Town Halls,” is being organized by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the Association of State Democratic Committees (ASDC), and is set to kick off Friday with a stop in Iowa.

The town hall tour comes just over three months after the Democratic Party suffered brutal 2024 elections losses, with the Republican Party gaining power in the White House and both chambers of Congress.

“Republicans in Congress know they sold out their voters by backing the Trump-Musk agenda — and now they’re terrified to be in the same room as the people who sent them to Washington,” DNC Chair Ken Martin wrote in a Thursday press release. “When 217 House Republicans voted for Donald Trump’s billionaire tax handout, each one agreed to destroy Medicaid, keep food from kids and families in need, and target the programs that take care of our veterans — all in service of massive tax breaks for their billionaire donors and wealthy corporations. Instead of facing their constituents, they’re running scared and hiding from the people they were elected to represent. If they won’t talk to their own voters, then Democrats will. That’s why we’ll be hosting People’s Town Halls in all 50 states across the country, starting now with vulnerable GOP-held target districts. Working families deserve to have their voices heard, even if Republicans want to ignore them.”

Other Democratic leaders have launched their own tours across the U.S., including Democratic Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who launched his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour in February, and Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who announced this week that he is kicking off his own tour of Republican-led districts across the nation beginning Friday.

The DNC tour will host town halls in all 50 states, and will begin with two events where Walz is scheduled to make an appearance, according to the press release.

Walz ran as the Democratic vice presidential nominee alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris, who led the Democratic ticket, in their failed 2024 White House bid. The left-wing governor is reportedly considering running for reelection in the 2026 Minnesota gubernatorial race, rather than making a bid for his state’s open Senate seat. However, he has not ruled out a potential presidential run in 2028.

The Democratic Party has recently struggled to develop strong messaging since President Donald Trump defeated Harris and swung many blue counties in the U.S. to the right in the 2024 election. Moreover, Martin wrote in a memo released Feb. 18 that Americans “now see the Republicans as the party of the working class and Democrats as the party of the elites.”

A string of recently-released polls have shown that many Americans are largely dissatisfied with congressional Democrats’ leadership, such as a Navigator Research survey released Wednesday, which found that a slim majority of voters, 51%, believe that Democrats in Congress are “elitist.” The Democratic Party’s overall approval ratings neared all-time lows in January following Trump’s inauguration.

Several Democrats have attempted to form a resistance to push back against Trump’s agenda, primarily directing their attention to his newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, which aims to eliminate unnecessary spending across the federal government. The agency has thus far made massive cuts to several government agencies’ workforces.

Despite Democrats’ protests over the cuts, Americans largely approve of the agency’s attempts to reduce government spending.

Many House Democrats have also publicly critiqued the GOP’s Trump-backed government spending bill, such as Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who claimed Thursday in a social media post that the spending bill “turns the federal government into a slush fund for Donald Trump and Elon Musk.” In response to the left’s messaging, Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman on Thursday criticized his party’s opposition to the spending bill as “total theater.”
