Democratic strategist James Carville on Wednesday urged former President Joe Biden to step aside from political discourse, asserting that his continued involvement would harm their party.

Biden concluded his presidency on Monday by issuing preemptive pardons to five of his family members and to President Donald Trump’s political opponents. Following a conversation about the pardons, Carville, on “Politics War Room,” criticized Biden’s handling of the final chapter of his presidency, saying the Democratic Party no  longer wants to hear from him.

“Well, this is the kind of truth of where we are … We know Biden. Actually, you and I know him personally. And I think it’s fair to say that we’re long-time, at some level, admirers of Joe Biden. And what he’s done to himself is no one wants to hear from this guy anymore,” Carville said. “Okay, just go to your condo in Rehoboth and stay there. And that’s not because we’re bad people or we’re mean people. It was all his doing. All his doing. This entire thing. And this kind of petty back and forth, ‘Oh I would have beat Trump,’ and no one fucking believes that at all.”

Biden said in a recent USA Today interview that he felt he “had the best chance of beating” Trump in the November presidential election, but acknowledged uncertainty about whether he would have been able to serve another four years in office.

“And then fighting with Jill Biden and Alexandra Pelosi. I mean, just look, guy — you had a noble career. Your last act was terrible. Just get out of the way. The party’s moving on. I mean, they’re really moving on,” Carville continued. “And it’s very sad, but that’s just where we are. And he created this himself. He has nobody to blame but himself. Nobody.”

Co-host Al Hunt agreed with Carville, saying Biden should “go away” and raise funds for a presidential library, something he was previously struggling to do, The Wall Street Journal reported in October.

“Joe Biden really has no role to play in the national dialogue now,” Hunt said. “And that is sad.”

“If he tries to play a role, it’ll be a negative role,” Carville responded, with Hunt agreeing.

Carville then repeated his sentiment that the ending of Biden’s long career in politics is “tragic” because of his belief that the former president was a good person and politician.

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Sunday that Biden’s 38% job approval rating was the lowest for any president who did not seek or win reelection
