Debbie Nelson, the mother of rap superstar Eminem, has passed away at the age of 69. A representative for Eminem confirmed that Nelson died on Monday evening in St. Joseph, Missouri, due to complications from lung cancer.

News of Nelson’s illness first surfaced in September. TMZ was the first to report her death.

The relationship between Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, and his mother was complex and often tumultuous, a theme that frequently appeared in his music. He explored their strained relationship in songs like “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” and “My Mom,” openly expressing his feelings of anger and abandonment.

Despite their public struggles, Nelson also sought to share her side of the story. In 1999, she sued her son for defamation, and in 2008, she published a memoir titled “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem,” detailing her perspective on their life and challenges.

While their relationship was marked by conflict, Eminem also expressed moments of empathy and understanding towards his mother in his music.
