New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo seems to be running out of friends.
The boisterous Democrat, who became a media hero for being the most vocal anti-Trump governor during the pandemic, is now facing impeachment.
It seems clearer now that Cuomo has outlived his usefulness as Donald Trump’s foil, as he faces a new allegation of sexual misconduct and more scrutiny of his handling of the COVID-19 crisis.
On Thursday, the New York state Assembly Speaker announced an impeachment probe into Cuomo’s “misconduct.”
“The reports of accusations concerning the governor are serious. The committee will have the authority to interview witnesses, subpoena documents, and evaluate evidence, as is allowed by the New York State Constitution. I have the utmost faith that Assemblymember (Charles) Lavine and the members of the (Judiciary) committee will conduct an expeditious, full and thorough investigation,” Speaker Carl Heastie said.
Heastie added that the Assembly’s investigation would run parallel with an ongoing inquiry by state Attorney General Laticia James, also a Democrat.
Meanwhile, New York Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs said in his own statement that the impeachment investigation was appropriate.
“I agree with Speaker Heastie that now is the time for the Legislature to commence its own review of these matters as a part of its Constitutional responsibilities.”
Amid questions about the major scandal – how Cuomo’s COVID nursing home policy perhaps killed 15,000 New Yorkers – the real pressure is coming from his bad behavior with women.
Another complaint about sexual misconduct by Cuomo – the sixth – emerged Thursday. This time, a former aide reportedly alleged that Cuomo “aggressively groped” her under her blouse during a visit to the governor’s mansion last year.
It’s possible this could turn into a legal probe, as it was reported to the Albany police.
Reportedly 22 Democratic state senators are calling for Cuomo to resign. So is the National Organization for Women, whose leader said, “It’s become untenable for the governor to remain in office. … The mounting allegations of sexual harassment are going to cloud every day of his administration if he stays in it.”
