Could Pete Buttigieg’s ‘Inflated’ Political Activity Be Laying Groundwork For Presidential Run?

Biden administration's Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is ramping up his political activities and may be laying the groundwork for a 2024 presidential run, according to Politico.

Biden administration’s Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is ramping up his political activities and may be laying the groundwork for a 2024 presidential run, according to Politico.

Buttigieg’s allies have been building out a dark money group affiliated with his unsuccessful 2020 presidential campaign, the Win the Era Action Fund, making political contributions and maintaining its valuable email list, according to Politico.

While anonymous sources cited by Politico said Buttigieg doesn’t have plans to run for office any time soon, the organization’s recruitment of Buttigieg allies and Democratic donors suggests otherwise.

The Win the Era Action Fund recently hired Buttigieg’s 2020 campaign national investment chair, Swati Mylavarapu, along with Nicole Fox, who was a bundler for Buttigieg and worked on the documentary “Mayor Pete,” according to filings obtained by Politico.

Buttigieg would still have to buy back the Win the Era Action Fund email list, which serves as a valuable fundraising tool, if he were to run for president, but the group allows him to keep one foot in electoral politics as he keeps a low profile while serving in President Joe Biden’s cabinet, according to Politico.

His 2020 campaign was converted into Win the Era PAC, and the Win the Era Action Fund funneled $185,000 to the PAC in 2021. The PAC had $1.6 million as of November 2022.

There’s been widespread speculation that Biden will not run for reelection in 2024; he will be 81 in 2024, and critics have pointed to the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, inflation, and the baby formula shortage as signs he shouldn’t run again.

Potential 2024 Democratic candidates are expected to prepare quietly so as not to express disloyalty to Biden, who still says he plans to run again.
