A Connecticut-based personal injury law firm, Kennedy Johnson Schwab & Roberge, P.C., has filed a lawsuit alleging that $300,000 intended for one of its clients was stolen by unknown scammers.
The lawsuit, filed on July 24 in the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, names unidentified defendants referred to as John Does 1 through 20.
The complaint accuses these individuals of fraudulently intercepting email communications between the law firm and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), resulting in the misdirection of the settlement funds.

According to the complaint, the scammers used spoofed emails to trick the firm into transferring the settlement to an unauthorized Citibank account under their control. The law firm is seeking compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
Christopher Drury of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani is representing the plaintiff in this case.
