Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Boston field office apprehended a Guatemalan national convicted of manslaughter in Connecticut, officials announced Monday.

Manuel Fernando Alejandor-Martinez, 35, was taken into custody on June 7th in Durham, Connecticut, following his release from state prison.

Alejandor-Martinez had served a small portion of a sentence for a 2021 conviction of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle.

“Manuel Fernando Alejandor-Martinez killed a resident of our Connecticut community,” said ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons. “While operating a motor vehicle, he caused a tragic accident that traumatized an innocent family. Alejandor-Martinez posed a significant threat to the residents of our neighborhoods. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by aggressively arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from New England.”

According to ERO Boston, Alejandor-Martinez was initially arrested by the West Haven Police Department in June 2020 on charges of manslaughter and failing to insure a motor vehicle. At that time, ERO lodged an immigration detainer against him, a request to notify ICE when he was nearing release from custody.

The Connecticut Superior Court in Milford convicted Alejandro of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle on Dec. 10, 2021, and sentenced him to eight years in prison followed by five years of probation. The court then suspended four years and six months of his prison sentence.

The Connecticut Department of Corrections refused to honor ERO’s immigration detainer and released Alejandro to a halfway house on Aug. 1, 2023.

On May 10, the Connecticut Department of Corrections discharged Alejandor from the halfway house upon completing his sentence.

Deportation officers from ERO Boston’s Hartford field office arrested Alejandor on June 7 in Durham. He remains in ERO custody.

The news release from ERO details that Alejandor-Martinez will now face immigration proceedings before an immigration judge. The judge will determine whether he can remain in the United States or will be ordered deported to Guatemala.
