The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is taking on Connecticut’s ban on so-called “assault weapons” in a case that could have major implications for gun rights nationwide. Oral arguments are set for Wednesday, October 16th at 2 p.m. EDT before the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.
The SAF, joined by the Connecticut Citizens Defense League and three private citizens, argues that the Connecticut law unfairly reclassifies many commonly owned firearms as “assault weapons,” even though they were previously considered ordinary firearms by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“From the beginning,” noted SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “the state has insisted these firearms are not ‘in common use.’ The evidence clearly shows otherwise, yet the state wants the Court to adopt an unprecedented legal standard in contradiction to standards established by the Second Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.”
The SAF contends that Connecticut’s argument contradicts established legal standards and defies the Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen ruling, which set a higher bar for gun control regulations.

This legal showdown could significantly impact how courts interpret Second Amendment rights and the definition of “common use” firearms in the future.
