Commentator: US Men’s Soccer Team Got “Mugged” By Agreement, But Deserve It

On Saturday the U.S. Men’s National Team plays the Netherlands in the “knockout stage” of the World Cup, with at stake the opportunity to become one of the elite eight of global soccer.

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh, who has dubbed soccer “communist,” is not as impressed with the USMNT’s play as he is with their crappy prowess at dealmaking.

On his podcast on Wednesday, Walsh berated the USMNT for agreeing to give up half of the millions of dollars it makes from playing in the World Cup in the name of “equality.”

Where does the rest of the money go? To the U.S. Women’s National Team, led by the ultrawoke lesbian Megan Rapinoe, which will be greatly enriched by actually not playing.

As Walsh explained, citing a story by the sports website Outkick.com, the men will reap a $13 million payday for making it this far in the tournament. If the USMNT pulls off a miracle and actually wins the Cup, they will reap $42 million.

Yet the women’s team gets exactly half under a recently inked collective bargaining agreement between the squads, meaning they’ll be paid $6.5 million as of now and could make up to $21 million.

The women’s team has long complained about not making as much as the men, despite being more successful on the field. In March 2021, Rapinoe, acting as the team’s spokeswoman, spoke with President Joe Biden on “Equal Pay Day.”

“I’ve been devalued, I’ve been disrespected and dismissed because I am a woman. And I’ve been told that I don’t deserve any more than less, because I am a woman,” Rapinoe said at the time.

The problem, however, is that the men make more because their game is more popular. The USMNT brings in bigger crowds, bigger checks from sponsors, and more money flowing from merchandise and licensing.

Walsh noted this in his comments.

“The women’s team will earn more money sitting on their couches and watching the men’s team play than they earned from winning the World Cup themselves in 2019 and 2015,” Walsh observed.

“The men get more prize money because their sport earns more revenue, because there is greater public interest in their sport because they are better and more impressive athletes, by soccer’s standards anyway.”

“There was never any conspiracy to deprive female soccer players of fair compensation. They just generate less revenue,” he added. “It’s as simple as that.”

“And now they’re being given a cut of revenue they did not generate — revenue that they lifted not a finger nor a foot to earn — all in the name of equality.”

Walsh added that this underscores the “fundamental absurdity” of gender equality as a concept.

That’s because men, by nature, are bigger, stronger, and more athletic, and “nature itself cannot be guilty of an injustice, because nature just is.”

“In some ways,” he said, “you could call it old-fashioned. The men are making the money and bringing it home to the female soccer players. The men are the breadwinners, and Megan Rapinoe and the female soccer players are like the housewives of professional sports.”

Walsh said he may support such an arrangement, “if the women were upholding their end of the bargain, by, like, doing the men’s laundry and keeping their houses in order.”

“But they are required to do nothing, which again makes this unjust.”

Yet in the end, he concluded, the men got “mugged” but deserve to be on the “losing end” because they were “afraid to say no … too intent on virtue-signaling, too fearful of upsetting the feminists.”

Consequently, said Walsh, the USMNT gave away half their earnings to “the least sympathetic and needy charity in the world: known as women’s soccer.”
