Julio Herrera moved with his family from Mexico to Hillsborough County, Florida, to a rural farm area.
Once settled, Herrera acquired a large amount of property which he farmed. It was reported that Julio allegedly brought large quantities of marijuana from Mexico to the U.S.
On 29 December 1994, Julio stopped at the “Little Store”, a convenience store owned by his family, to purchase coffee and breakfast and chat with his sister as was his daily routine.
His truck was parked in front of the business door. The suspects backed their vehicle into the space next to the victim’s truck. One of the suspects exited his vehicle and went to one of two pay phones at the corner of the business parking lot.
He stood at the phone until Julio exited the store. Just as Julio got into his truck, the suspect approached Julio and shot him. Police say that the suspects fled north on Hwy 301.
This case remains an unsolved homicide.
