CNN’s John King broke down which voter demographics will bolster Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump’s chances of winning in the November election during a Friday segment.
King pointed out how Harris may fare better among women and racial minorities than President Joe Biden, but that white male voters helped Biden win in 2020. The 2024 race has become increasingly more competitive since Harris replaced Biden following his exit from the ticket in a Sunday statement on “X.”
“Where is Kamala Harris with key voting groups? Number one, does African American support go way up? Then, that maybe in like 2008 put North Carolina in play. Does support for Latino voters go up? Then Arizona and Nevada become a little more interesting for the Democrats. Donald Trump is leading there right now. But, if you think about Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan … it’s much easier for Democrats to get to the White House if you win those three,” King said.

“So what are you gonna look for in Kamala Harris? How’s she doing among white voters, especially white men? Hillary Clinton got in the low thirties. She lost those three states. Joe Biden got closer to forty, he won those three states. And older voters, like those voters in Pennsylvania, older voters and white men were a key part of Biden’s coalition to win those blue wall states when Hillary Clinton lost those states,” he continued.
CNN political director David Chalian pointed to a CNN poll from Wednesday finding Harris faring significantly better than Biden both in battleground states and on a national scale. The poll found Harris trailing Trump by three points, 49% to 46%, in July while the former president led Biden by six points in the same poll conducted in April and June.
Harris polled better than Biden among voters between the ages 18-34, Hispanics, blacks and females, according to the CNN poll. The vice president is leading Trump’s among young people 47% to 43%, while she narrowed the Republican nominee’s lead among Hispanics from nine points to two points.

Harris also holds a larger lead than Biden among female voters by five points, 50% to 45%, while Trump and Biden tied 46% to 46% among the female demographic in April and June, according to the poll.
The poll surveyed 1,631 registered voters between July 22-23 with a 3% margin of error. The survey questioned the same voters who participated in the poll released in April or June.
King pointed to Biden’s low chances of success during a July 18 segment, three days before the president dropped out. Trump was competitive in traditionally blue states, New Hampshire, Colorado and New Mexico, while edging out Biden in Virginia.
