SPRING HILL, Fla. – A Clewiston man has been arrested after attempting to cash a forged check at a bank in Spring Hill.
Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at the Cadence Bank located at 14211 Powell Road at approximately 11:34 a.m. on April 2, 2025, regarding a subject attempting to cash a fraudulent check.
Bank tellers contacted the owner of the checking account, who resides in Georgia. The account owner confirmed that the checking account was new and that they had not yet received any checks.

Deputies arriving at the bank immediately took Javier Martinez into custody.
Further investigation by the bank revealed that other fraudulent checks from the same account had been cashed or attempts had been made to cash them at other bank branches in different counties. These checks were cashed by unknown suspects other than Martinez.
The investigation also determined that Martinez had been dropped off near the bank by an unidentified female he knows as “Juan’s girlfriend” from Clewiston. Martinez told detectives that the woman was driving a white Toyota sedan. Martinez admitted that he felt he was doing something “shady and wrong” by attempting to cash the check.

Martinez stated that he was to receive a percentage of the check’s value in exchange for cashing it.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that additional arrests are pending as the investigation continues.
