CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Clearwater Police Department is continuing its intensive pedestrian and bicyclist safety initiative, funded by a $27,214 contract awarded late last year.

The initiative aims to address the high number of traffic crashes involving serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists in Pinellas County, which ranks among the top 25 counties in Florida for such incidents.

Through May 9, 2025, the department will conduct High Visibility Enforcement Details (HVE) at targeted locations, including Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, Drew Street, Court Street, and Missouri Avenue.

“Our goal is to increase awareness and compliance with traffic laws that protect our most vulnerable road users,” stated a spokesperson for the Clearwater Police Department. “We want to make Clearwater’s streets safer for everyone.”

The HVE details are funded through a contract with the University of North Florida, in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation.

While the primary focus of the enforcement efforts is education, officers will issue citations for violations depending on the circumstances.

Safety Reminders:

  • Drivers: Obey speed limits and move-over laws, never drive impaired, carry proof of insurance, and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Bicyclists: Obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic, and use lights when riding at night.
  • Pedestrians: Cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals, and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night.

The Clearwater Police Department encourages all residents and visitors to prioritize safety when traveling on Clearwater’s roadways.
