CLAY COUNTY, Fla.– A Clay County man with a history of felony convictions has been sentenced to over six years in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearm offenses.
Edward Sherwood Gustafson IV, 31, of Green Cove Springs, was sentenced on Wednesday by Chief United States District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan to 78 months (6 years and 6 months) in federal prison. He will also be required to forfeit a Smith and Wesson pistol and ammunition used in his crimes.
Gustafson was arrested on May 9, 2023, following a traffic stop initiated by Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies who recognized him on an outstanding felony arrest warrant. During the stop, a struggle ensued between Gustafson and the arresting deputy, but Gustafson was eventually handcuffed. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a loaded Smith and Wesson pistol.

According to court documents, Gustafson’s legal troubles stemmed further back to January 2023, when he became the subject of a search warrant connected to drug distribution activities. Gustafson pleaded guilty in August 2023 to charges of possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
“As we fight the scourge of drugs that plague our communities, we are grateful for our partnership with the US Attorney’s Office. Together we will continue to hold accountable those who choose to sell this poison in our streets,” said Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel Disalvo.
