City Of St. Petersburg Prepares For Potential Storm Impacts

The City of St. Petersburg is actively preparing for the potential impacts of an approaching storm expected to affect the area through the weekend and into next week.

Citywide Preparations:

  • Sandbag Distribution: The City has opened six emergency sandbag distribution locations, which will remain open until 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 3rd, or until weather conditions prevent further operations. Over 10,000 sandbags have already been distributed to residents.
  • Wastewater Management: The City’s wastewater treatment facilities have been assessed and confirmed to have sufficient capacity to handle the anticipated rainfall.
  • Construction Safety: Construction cranes are being evaluated for wind and rain resistance and secured as needed.

  • Flood Mitigation: Lake levels are being lowered to accommodate increased rainfall.
  • Emergency Services: Police and Fire Rescue teams have activated storm protocols and are ready to deploy for post-storm relief efforts.
  • Housing and Neighborhoods: Teams are assessing and securing construction debris in neighborhoods and preparing for post-storm debris removal.
  • City Development: Boats at the Municipal Marina are being secured, and building inspections are underway. Message boards have been placed to warn of potential flooding, and the South Core Parking Garage is open for residents to park above street level.
  • Community Enrichment: While closures are not currently anticipated, city pools have lowered water levels in preparation for heavy rain, and parks have been cleaned to minimize post-storm debris. Teams are also on standby to handle any debris removal needs after the storm.
