China has strongly condemned the United States’ approval of a $2 billion arms sale to Taiwan, vowing to take “all necessary measures” to defend its claim over the self-ruled island.

The U.S. State Department authorized the sale on Friday, which includes advanced surface-to-air missile systems and radar technology. This move is part of the Biden administration’s strategy to counter China’s growing military influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taiwan’s defense ministry expressed gratitude for the arms sale, stating it would enhance the island’s defense capabilities and contribute to regional stability. However, China views the sale as a direct threat to its sovereignty and a violation of its “one China” policy.

“China strongly condemns and firmly opposes it,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement. “This seriously violates China’s sovereignty and security interests, seriously damages China-US relations, and endangers peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

Beijing has warned that it will take all necessary measures to protect its territorial integrity, raising concerns about potential military action against Taiwan. China has consistently refused to rule out the use of force to bring the island under its control.

This latest arms sale further escalates tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan. The U.S. maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding Taiwan, which allows for arms sales to the island but does not explicitly commit to defending it in the event of a Chinese attack.

The situation in the Taiwan Strait remains a major flashpoint in the region, with both sides engaging in military exercises and displays of force. This ongoing dispute has significant implications for regional security and the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific.
