On April 11, 2023, Kaitlyn Coones went missing from her foster home and went to live with Jonathon, who was residing with his mother Nicole at the time. According to prosecutors, Kaitlyn gave Jonathon an ultimatum – kill his mother, or she would end their relationship. When Jonathon failed to comply, Kaitlyn took matters into her own hands.
Prosecutors say that on April 19, 2023, Kaitlyn Coones bludgeoned Nicole Jones over the head with a rock in her Toledo, Ohio, home. The young woman’s violent act was driven by her belief that Nicole’s disapproval of her relationship with Jonathon needed to be eliminated.
After the murder, Kaitlyn and Jonathon are said to have wrapped Nicole’s body in tarps and placed it in the trunk of her own vehicle, according to ABC News.

The pair then had dinner with the body still in the vehicle before disposing of it in a nearby dumpster, which has since been emptied, leaving the authorities unable to recover the remains.
The horrific crime quickly garnered national attention, with the U.S. Marshals Service’s Missing Child Unit issuing a press release about the disappearance of Kaitlyn and Jonathon, who were eventually apprehended in Mexico.
On Tuesday, Kaitlyn Coones and Jonathon Jones both pleaded no contest to charges of aggravated murder and abuse of a corpse. As a result of the plea deal, they were each sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
In addition to the criminal charges, the administrator of Nicole’s estate has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Kaitlyn and Jonathon, seeking $25,000 in damages and other associated costs.
