Education, immigration, property insurance, abortion, and the economy took center stage Monday night as Gov. Ron DeSantis and Democratic challenger Charlie Crist faced off in the only debate of their campaign.
On Tuesday, 37 former colleagues and staffers of Charlie Crist took the stage, metaphorically speaking.
George LeMieux, Crist’s former chief of staff who he appointed to be U.S. senator, and 36 additional former staffers and colleagues endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for re-election in an open letter.
In part, the letter says, “The choice this November could not be more clear: we unanimously endorse Governor Ron DeSantis for re-election.”
Some may have sensed Democrat Charlie Crist was in trouble in his election battle against incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis when “The View” turned on him – if only momentarily.
On the gabfest in September, left-wing pundit Ana Navarro, who plays an anti-Trump Republican on TV, questioned how thoroughly Crist had vetted running mate Karla Hernández-Mats.
The query came after Crist appeared blindsided after pro-DeSantis forces revived a 2016 Hernandez tweet expressing sympathy for the death of Cuban communist dictator Fidel Castro.
Also, In September, at a campaign event, Hernández-Mats introduced her background in education and working with children with special needs, as a qualification for holding the statewide office and handling the “dysfunctional legislature.”
“I’m a teacher, I am a ‘sped’ teacher-so my major was emotionally-handicapped education, okay? That by itself qualifies me to deal with the dysfunctional legislature,” Hernández-Mats said in a video.
Last week, Crist’s campaign manager unexpectedly quit. Austin Durrer, who has been a senior Crist aide since 2016, when Crist was first elected to represent Pinellas County in Congress, was arrested on a domestic violence charge.
Per news reports this week, Crist’s campaign tried to spin the cause of Durrer’s departure just three weeks before Election Day as a “family matter” and “family emergency.” It surely was.
The New York Post reported on Friday that Durrer was busted at his home in Maryland on Tuesday. He was ordered to vacate the house and give up his guns as provisions of being released on $10,000 bail. Durrer faces second-degree assault charges.
That’s to name a few.
