Just a week after a deadly tornado outbreak, the central United States is facing the threat of more severe weather this weekend, with the potential for tornadoes in several states.

AccuWeather meteorologists are warning of another powerful storm system that will bring a mix of severe weather, snow, and strong winds to the region. This is the fourth major storm to impact the central U.S. this month, following storms earlier in March that produced over 220 tornadoes and nearly 1,900 incidents of high winds and hail.

Compared to March 2024, the current month has seen approximately double the amount of severe weather incidents and nearly four times the number of tornadoes.

The approaching storm system will initially be influenced by a southern-tracking storm bringing flooding rain and drought relief to parts of Texas from Thursday to Friday. This system may initially limit the larger storm’s access to warmth and moisture.

However, as the southern system moves eastward, the potential for severe weather will increase over the Mississippi Valley on Sunday, depending on the amount of sunshine, moisture, and warmth that develops.

Over a dozen states are at risk of severe weather on Sunday, including the potential for damaging wind gusts (60-70 mph), large hail, and tornadoes. The risk could extend into parts of the East on Monday.

Meanwhile, high winds capable of generating dust storms and increasing wildfire risks are expected in portions of the southern High Plains.

To the north, the storm’s northern flank will bring a swath of snow and wintry mix from central Colorado and eastern Wyoming to parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota, and northern parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and New England.

The multifaceted storm is expected to bring widespread impacts across a large portion of the country. Residents in affected areas are urged to monitor weather forecasts closely and take necessary precautions.
