CENTCOM: US General Oversees Israeli Withdrawal From Lebanon, Discusses Regional Security

General Michael Kurilla, commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), visited Beirut today to oversee the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon and to discuss regional security concerns.

General Kurilla met with General Joseph Aoun, Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and Major General Jasper Jeffers, co-chair of the trilateral monitoring mechanism overseeing the cessation of hostilities.

The mechanism, led by the U.S. and supported by France, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the Israel Defense Forces, aims to ensure a lasting peace between the two nations.

A key focus of the visit was the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Al Khiam region of Lebanon, with Lebanese Armed Forces taking their place. General Kurilla was present at the monitoring headquarters during this operation, marking a significant step towards implementing the ceasefire agreement.

Beyond the immediate ceasefire, General Kurilla and General Aoun addressed the broader security situation in the region, particularly the evolving situation in Syria and its potential impact on neighboring countries. They explored ways to enhance military cooperation between the US and Lebanon to address shared security challenges.
