Carjacking Of Illinois Democrat Offers A Two-Fer On The Hypocrisy Meter

It did not get as much attention, but the day before U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, a white, left-wing Democratic congresswoman from Philadelphia, was carjacked at gunpoint, Illinois state Sen. Kimberly Lightford also was carjacked by armed bandits in a Chicago suburb.

Like Scanlon, Lightford, who is black, is a major proponent of defunding the police. And like Scanlon, Lightford, who is the Illinois Senate majority leader, also has sponsored a bill to substitute mental health pros for cops in responding to crimes. She also called for police budgets in Illinois to be slashed.

Yet, like Scanlon, when thugs accosted her and her husband, demanding their Mercedes SUV and their valuables, she called the police – not a mental health expert.

In a statement, Lightford admitted she was traumatized by the incident and said she was grateful that neither she nor her husband were hurt.

She also added, “I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support. I want to especially thank Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Broadview Police Department for their quick and thorough response.”

Police did recover her car, and the investigation is ongoing.

But Lightford’s encounter with the carjackers also revealed another left-wing hypocrisy.

Police initially reported that shots were fired during the incident, although they did not come from them.

Some of those shots were fired by Lightford’s husband, who exchanged gunfire with the carjackers.

Fox News reported that her husband is a legal gun owner and has a concealed-carry license.

“It was a lot of shots being fired. I think they were shooting at my husband and me and luckily enough my husband is concealed and carry and he was able to protect us,” Lightford told local media.

And, of course, as could almost be predicted, Lightford voted against the bill that allowed her husband to carry that gun legally.

In 2013, Illinois became the last state to enact a concealed-carry law. Although 22 Democrats voted for the bill, Lightford was among 17 others on her side to vote against allowing Illinois residents to have permits to carry concealed weapons.
