After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday scheduled a special election in House District 35, Republican Erika Booth became the first candidate to formally enter the race, according to the state Division of Elections website.

Five other potential candidates were listed on the state website as having campaign accounts open to run in the November 2024 election for the seat in Orange and Osceola counties.

Those candidates can shift the accounts to run in the special election, which DeSantis called because former Rep. Fred Hawkins, R-St. Cloud, was appointed last month as president of South Florida State College.

The other candidates with open accounts are Democrats Rishi Bagga, Marucci Guzman, and Tom Keen and Republicans Ken Davenport and Scott Alan Moore. Guzman opened an account Wednesday.

The special primary election is scheduled for Nov. 7, with a special general election on Jan. 16.
