Representative Adam Schiff of California said that Democrats are ready to “stand up to” President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, just weeks before his inauguration for a second term.
Speaking on CNN’s special coverage, “January 6th: Congress Certifies the Election,” Schiff emphasized a readiness to “fight back” against any perceived law violations or abuses of power by Trump.
When asked about the balance between legislative priorities and investigating Trump, Schiff, a prominent critic of the former president, did not rule out the possibility of impeachment. “If he violates the law, if he violates the Constitution, if he abuses his office, we will vigorously push back, fight back, stand up to him, as we had to do during his first term in office,” Schiff said.

The remarks come as Trump, certified Monday as the next president, prepares to take office.
Schiff played a central role in Trump’s first impeachment inquiry during his tenure as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
In late 2019, Schiff was appointed as a lead impeachment manager and spearheaded the case against Trump, accusing him of abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.
Schiff’s prosecution team argued that Trump’s actions undermined U.S. national security and the integrity of elections. RELATED: FBI Docs Show Burisma Execs Questioned Hunter Biden’s Intelligence
The impeachment case culminated in a Senate trial in early 2020, where Trump was acquitted of charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Despite a Democratic-controlled House voting to impeach Trump, the Senate, then controlled by Republicans, voted largely along party lines to clear him of wrongdoing. Utah Senator Mitt Romney was the sole Republican to break ranks, voting to convict Trump on the abuse of power charge.
While Schiff did not explicitly call for impeachment, his assertion that Democrats would “vigorously push back” signals that the party may not shy away from oversight and legal challenges.
