A 25-year-old California man was sentenced Monday to 12 years in state prison for the brutal death of his father, Michael Fernandes.

Jason Fernandes, 25, of Ventura, previously pled guilty on February 15 to one count of voluntary manslaughter.

He also admitted to four special allegations and aggravating factors, including that he used scissors as a deadly weapon and that the victim was vulnerable.

According to officials, on March 9, 2023, Jason Fernandes went to his father’s residence at a senior facility in Moorpark.

A verbal argument turned physical when Fernandes forced entry into his father’s apartment.

Witnesses saw Fernandes hit his father before leaving the apartment covered in blood.

When neighbors checked on the victim, they saw he had suffered a stab wound from scissors to his
abdomen.

Michael Fernandes was pronounced dead at a local hospital with a stab wound and significant lacerations to his head and face.

Fernandes was arrested a short time later in a nearby river bottom by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Supervising Senior Deputy District Attorney Rafael Orellana prosecuted the case.

“The conviction and sentence in this case demonstrate the defendant’s remorse and willingness to accept responsibility for this senseless killing,” Orellana said. “The victim’s death was an avoidable tragedy, and one for which today’s sentencing provides some measure of justice.”
