A renowned California surfing haven has outraged liberals by dropping several divisive, identity-driven left-wing commemoration activities in 2024 and instead focus on the city’s culture and history.
According to the Orange County Register, the Huntington Beach City Council earlier this week directed city staff “to develop a history program, with monthly themes that include the founding of the city, the discovery of oil and celebrating local libraries.”
Those programs will replace events such as Black History Month in February, Women’s History Month in March, and Pride Month in June. The city will not formally celebrate those and other similar occasions next year, although one advocate of the new program said they could return in the future.
Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark and City Councilmen Casey McKeon and Pat Burns noted in a report about the shift in celebrations that the move is intended “to be free of any identity politics and political agendas,” the Register reported.
Besides the aforementioned proposed themes, the city will also consider events to celebrate California state history, what it means to residents to live in “charter city,” surfing, and preserving nature.
According to the Register, Councilman McKeon said at a meeting on Tuesday night that he and the other advocates of the change in commemorative events want “to honor the rich, historic heritage of not only Huntington Beach, but the United States and California as well.”
“That’s the rich, historic heritage that we all share,” said McKeon.
While conservatives on social media praised the council’s new direction, liberals were not amused.
On use on X, as Huntington Beach was trending on the platform, griped, “Huntington Beach City Council votes to ban Pride, Black and Women’s History celebrations and then gets hit with an earthquake. Even God thinks you’re a bunch of a–holes.”

Another added, “Hard to believe in 2024 there is a city still so misogynistic bigoted and racist in one of the bluest states in the nation. Boycott conservative-enclave Huntington Beach California!”
As the Tampa Free Press reported at the time, the city made news in September when the council voted to ban universal COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates, a move that countered what some liberal enclaves were considering as virus infractions ticked upward.
