TAMPA, Fla. – Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is mourning the loss of Jim, a 37-year-old male western lowland gorilla, who passed away after a period of declining health.
Jim had been under the constant care of the park’s animal care and veterinary teams in recent weeks. Despite their efforts, his health continued to deteriorate, leading to his passing.
Known for his protective nature and attentiveness as a father to Whimsey, Jim was a cherished member of the gorilla troop. His loss is deeply felt by the park staff and visitors alike.

“Jim was an attentive father to Whimsey and was known to be protective of the troop. While we mourn the loss of Jim, the health and well-being of the rest of the troop remains our primary focus during this difficult time,” said a Busch Gardens spokesperson in a post.
The park is now focusing on providing support and care to the remaining members of the gorilla troop during this difficult time.
While Jim’s absence will be deeply felt, the park remains committed to the well-being of the entire troop and ensuring their continued health and happiness.
