TAMPA, Fla. – The Bucs couldn’t get in rhythm on offense in a 14-12 loss to the Packers. The Bucs scored a late touchdown to pull to within two points but missed on a 2-point conversion try.
QB Tom Brady was missing his top three receivers in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Julio Jones, but Brady doesn’t want to blame that on the loss.
“Too many plays where we were behind the sticks and not good on 3rd down,” Brady said.
“Penalties, turnovers, missed opportunities. The defense played great. We have to play better on offense. We haven’t scored many points all season.”
“It wasn’t just that moment,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said. “There were a few things that happened that we can’t let happen. We got six crucial penalties
at different times that cost us the ballgame. Shooting ourselves in the foot.” Packers Aaron Rodgers threw touchdown passes in the first half to take a 14-3 lead.
The Buccaneers defense, according to defensive lineman rookie Logan Hall, wasn’t playing physical enough.
“From a defensive perspective, we just have to tackle,” Hall said. “We were missing a lot of tackles. That was what was hurting us primarily. Just being physical, cause that’s a physical issue.”
Brady led the Bucs on a drive late in the 2nd quarter only to have it end when Breshad Perriman fumbled on the 26-yard line and the Packers recovered. The Bucs have not been able to score a first-half touchdown through three games.
“Our job is to go out there and score points, ” Brady said. “We’re just not doing it. You’re not gonna score points if you don’t execute well.”
The Bucs will host the Chiefs Sunday night. Kansas City lost to the Colts to go to 2-1 and QB Patrick Mahomes says it was the offense or lack of which caused the loss.
“We didn’t play good enough, especially on the offensive side of the ball, starting with me.,” Mahomes said. “So we have to find ways to get the ball in the end zone.We have to learn from it. We have a hard game, ‘Sunday Night Football’ against Tampa with a great defense. So, we’ve got to get better quickly and if we don’t, we don’t want these L’s to start piling up.”
It appears the Bucs will be getting wide receiver Julio Jones back for next Sunday’s game as well as Mike Evans.
