TAMPA, Fla. – Now that Baker Mayfield has been named the starter by Bucs head coach Todd Bowles, Mayfield says he and the team can start preparing for the regular season.
“Now is the time to really ramp it up and go from here and start winning some ball games that count,” Mayfield said.
That would be the opener on the road at Minnesota September 10.
Mayfield had been in a competition with Kyle Trask and Bowles says it came down to a number of factors that led to Mayfield winning the job.

“Baker is our guy right now, experience wise and understanding the playbook just a little bit better,” Bowles said. Kyle is on the come up but we like both guys, we like where we’re at. Baker is the osne and Kyle the two.”
This gives the offensive unit some time to try and gell even though there’s still one preseason game left. Bowles made the decision Tuesday morning and told Trask first, then Mayfield.
“Yeah, it’s a good time,” Bowles said. “They’ve (1st unit) been practicing with him, but now just practicing as a unit. They get everyday and they work out the nuances that way. I think we have enough time.”
Mayfield started the Bucs first preseason game but didn’t play at all last week against the Jets. After winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma, Mayfield was the Cleveland Browns selection (1st overall pick) in the 2018 NFL draft, but has bounced around of late starting six games for the Carolina Panthers and four for the LA Rams last season. .
