Buccaneers Legend Derrick Brooks To Be Honored By Boy Scouts Of America

TAMPA, FL. – NFL Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks will be honored with the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council of Boy Scouts of America at a fundraising dinner Aug. 26.

The 5 p.m. event will be at the Grand Hyatt Tampa, 2900 Bayport Drive. The event will feature a live and silent auction.

This award is presented annually by the council to community leaders who provide outstanding civic service to adults and/or youth in the community. Those who receive the award personify what the Boy Scouts of America stand for – good citizenship, outstanding moral fiber with a dedication to others, and for living their lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

Auction items include a Puerta Vajarta trip, an Apple watch, a fishing charter, a signed Tampa Bay Lightning stick and jersey, autographed New York Yankees baseballs, and many other items.

The event, which benefits the programs of the council of the Tampa Bay Area, is chaired by Peter Collins, president of the council. Nick Digirolamo, vice president of finance for the council, is chair of the auction.

Brooks was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft, where he remained to play his entire 14-season professional career, earning a Super Bowl ring in the Super Bowl XXXVII. An 11-time Pro Bowl selection, he was inducted into the Pro Football of Fame in 2014 and was enshrined into the Ring of Honor by

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the number 55 never be worn by another Buccaneer player. Derrick is an appeals officer for the National Football League as well as the Executive Vice President of Corporate and Community Development at the Amalie Arena. 

He has received numerous community awards in Tampa for his work and dedication to the community. By partnering with the DeBartolo Family, he was able to realize a lifelong dream with the opening of the very first traditional charter high school in the Tampa Bay area – Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School.
