TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off their preseason campaign with a hard-fought 17-14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on the road.
A revitalized rushing attack proved to be the difference-maker, capped by a Ramon Jefferson touchdown run in the final minute of regulation.
The Bengals struck first, with Joe Burrow connecting with Tee Higgins for an early touchdown. Cincinnati’s opening drive showcased their offensive prowess, marching 73 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead.
However, the Bucs’ defense showed promise, with Kaevon Merriweather making key plays, including a pass breakup and a tackle for loss.
The Bucs’ offense responded with a methodical drive led by Kyle Trask, who completed five of seven passes for 68 yards. Rookie running back Bucky Irving punched it in from five yards out to tie the game at seven.
A Trask interception on the following drive gave the Bengals an opportunity, but the Bucs’ defense held strong, highlighted by Vi Jones’ pressure on Jake Browning and Tykee Smith’s hit on Tanner Hudson.
The game remained a back-and-forth battle, with both teams showcasing their depth and potential. Ultimately, the Bucs’ commitment to the run game paid off, as Ramon Jefferson’s late touchdown secured the victory.
This preseason win provides a positive start for the Buccaneers as they continue to prepare for the regular season. The revitalized rushing attack and promising defensive performances offer encouraging signs for the team’s future success.
