PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – A Brooksville man sustained serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash that temporarily shut down southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 277 on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when a BMW 330E traveling southbound changed lanes and collided with a tractor-trailer behind it.

The impact sent the BMW into another vehicle, a BMW X7, while the tractor-trailer continued forward, striking a GMC Denali pickup and another tractor-trailer in succession.

Five drivers were involved in the crash:

  • The 43-year-old male driver of the BMW 330E from Wesley Chapel was uninjured.
  • The 67-year-old male driver of the first tractor-trailer from Lakeland was uninjured.
  • The 46-year-old female driver of the BMW X7 from Odessa was uninjured.
  • The 50-year-old male driver of the GMC Denali from Brooksville sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
  • The 53-year-old male driver of the second tractor-trailer from Lehigh Acres was uninjured.

The crash caused a major backup on southbound I-75, requiring a full closure of the lanes for over three hours while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene.

The cause of the initial lane change that triggered the chain-reaction crash is under investigation.
