HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A routine traffic stop in Brooksville turned into a significant drug bust after deputies discovered a substantial amount of methamphetamine on a bicyclist.

On December 23th, Hernando County Sheriff’s Deputies D. Barlow and S. Belmonte stopped a bicyclist in the area of Alberta Street and Tascosa Avenue for a traffic violation. During the stop, the individual provided a false name to the deputies and attempted to flee the scene on his bicycle.

Deputies apprehended the suspect and, after further investigation, identified him as Steven Wendt, who was found to have two active warrants for violation of probation in Hernando County.

A search of Wendt’s revealed two baggies containing a total of 17.5 grams of a crystallized substance, which later tested positive for methamphetamine. Deputies also located a scale in Wendt’s backpack.

Wendt was arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer without violence, and providing a false name to law enforcement.

He is currently being held without bond.
