Britain’s Top Diplomat Says She Would Support British Citizens Joining A Ukrainian “Foreign Legion”

Britain’s top diplomat said on Sunday she would back any of her nation’s citizens who want to fight for Ukraine.

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss made the announcement after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that his nation is creating a “foreign legion” to help repel Russian invaders, according to the Epoch Times.

Truss told the BBC on Sunday British citizens “can make their own decisions about” whether to join in the defense of Ukraine. Yet she added that she “absolutely” would support those who want to enlist in Zelensky’s foreign legion,  “if that is what they want to do.”

“The people of Ukraine are fighting for freedom and democracy, not just for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe,” said Truss, according to the Times.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that on the same BBC show the Ukrainian ambassador to Britain, Vadym Prystaiko, acknowledged that an “overwhelming number of people” from several nations had visited the embassy and offered to fight President Vladimir Putin’s forces.

“We don’t want to break any laws, especially international laws,” Prystaiko told the BBC, “but most of these people who are coming, they are Ukrainians. They have the right to come home at any moment and fight.”

In a separate interview with Sky News, Epoch Times reported, Truss predicted the failure to block and defeat Putin in Ukraine could be a bad harbinger for what comes next.

“If we don’t stop Putin in Ukraine,” she said, “we are going to see others under threat—the Baltics, Poland, Moldova, and it could end up in a conflict with NATO.”

Truss also warned that the Russian dictator could “use the most unsavory means in this war,” adding that western nations must prepare for Putin to use “even worse weapons.”

Putin has reportedly put his nuclear forces on high alert, citing the “aggressive statements” coming from the leaders of NATO.

“We need to stop Putin’s ambitions in Ukraine,” Truss told Sky News. “There are dire consequences if we don’t for freedom and democracy across Europe.”
