NEW YORK, NY. – The New York Police Department has identified the woman who tragically died after being set on fire by an illegal immigrant on a Brooklyn subway train as 57-year-old Debrina Kawam of Toms River, New Jersey.  

Kawam was fatally burned on December 22nd when a man allegedly set her clothing ablaze while she was on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Authorities used forensic evidence and video surveillance footage to identify Kawam.

The suspect, Sebastian Zapeta, was arrested shortly after police released images of him to the public. He has been indicted on charges of murder and arson.  

This horrific incident has shocked New Yorkers and raised concerns about the safety of the city’s public transportation system.
