President Donald J. Trump signed a sweeping executive order on Monday aimed at reshaping policies within the U.S. Armed Forces, focusing on troop readiness, unit cohesion, and adherence to traditional military standards. The order specifically targets policies related to gender ideology, reversing measures from previous administrations and implementing stricter requirements for military service.

The order, titled Ensuring Readiness and Integrity in the Armed Forces, underscores the administration’s emphasis on maintaining a “lethal and effective fighting force” by eliminating what it describes as distractions and politically motivated agendas.

The directive introduces several significant policy changes for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the U.S. Coast Guard:

  1. Ban on Gender Ideology Policies: The order prohibits policies that recognize gender identities inconsistent with an individual’s biological sex. This includes ending the use of “invented and identification-based pronoun usage” across the Armed Forces.
  2. Stricter Medical and Fitness Standards: The directive reaffirms longstanding DoD policies requiring service members to be free from medical or mental conditions that could interfere with military duties. Gender dysphoria and associated treatments are deemed incompatible with the physical and mental readiness required for active service.
  3. Facility Segregation by Biological Sex: The order mandates that males and females use separate sleeping, bathing, and changing facilities, barring exceptions for “extraordinary operational necessity.”
  4. Revocation of Executive Order 14004: The order rescinds a 2021 directive by President Joe Biden that allowed individuals with gender dysphoria to serve openly in the military. Policies and guidance under the previous order will be reversed.
  5. Implementation Deadlines: The Secretary of Defense has been tasked with updating policies and issuing implementation directives within 60 days, with additional updates for the Coast Guard from the Secretary of Homeland Security.
  6. Internal Review and Reporting: The DoD must submit a comprehensive report to the President within 30 days, detailing steps to implement the order and ensuring alignment with its objectives.

The order highlights the Trump administration’s belief that gender ideology and associated policies undermine the military’s effectiveness, cohesion, and readiness. “For the sake of our Nation and the patriotic Americans who volunteer to serve it, military service must be reserved for those mentally and physically fit for duty,” the order states.

President Trump emphasized that the military’s mission should remain singularly focused on protecting the nation, free from “political agendas or ideologies harmful to unit cohesion.”

Supporters of the order, including military and conservative advocacy groups, praised the move as a return to traditional standards and priorities.

Critics, however, argue that the order could harm diversity and inclusion efforts within the military and alienate service members who identify as transgender. Advocacy organizations have vowed to challenge the policy in court, calling it discriminatory and harmful to morale.

The order is part of a series of executive actions by the Trump administration to roll back diversity and equity initiatives across federal agencies. It also aligns with the administration’s broader goal of reshaping the federal government to reflect traditional values and priorities.
