Dirlei Da Luz Da Silva, 35, a Brazilian national wanted in his home country for drug trafficking, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Long Branch, New Jersey, on March 21. Da Luz was sought by Brazilian authorities to serve a 12-year, 10-month prison sentence.
“We are committed to arresting aliens who have been involved in criminal activity, whether it be in the U.S. or overseas,” stated John Tsoukaris, Director of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark Field Office.

Da Luz’s journey to New Jersey began on March 6, 2024, when he was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol near El Paso, Texas. Despite the outstanding criminal warrant from Brazil, issued in January, Border Patrol released Da Luz on an order of release on recognizance, pending removal proceedings, after serving him with a notice to appear.
The recent arrest in Long Branch was the result of collaborative efforts between ICE and the FBI. Da Luz is now in ICE custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
