Border Officers Intercept 12 Pounds, $234K Worth Of Heroin At Texas Entry Port

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry thwarted a significant heroin smuggling attempt on Sunday, June 23rd, seizing 12 pounds of the illicit drug valued at over $234,000.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox at the Del Rio International Bridge.

CBP officers, following their border security protocols, referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection. Upon closer examination, six concealed packages containing the alleged heroin were found within the vehicle.

“Our frontline CBP officers continue to remain focused on our border security mission and CBP is proud of the work they do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community,” said Port Director Liliana Flores, Del Rio Port of Entry. “This heroin seizure is an example of ongoing operational efforts conducted daily to protect our borders.”

Following the discovery, the driver was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations special agents, and a criminal investigation is currently underway. The seized heroin and the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt were confiscated by CBP.
