Border Czar Tom Homan said on Tuesday that sanctuary cities like Boston needed to allow agents from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into jails.
Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in a March 5 hearing focusing on cities that refuse to cooperate with ICE. Homan told “Fox and Friends” co-host Lawrence Jones that Boston and other sanctuary cities were keeping ICE from taking criminals, including child rapists, into custody when they were released from prison.
“So, Tom, just to get into some of the specifics here, so you’ve got these folks that have already been charged with this,” Jones asked. “What your agents were asking, keep these guys behind bars and we will go pick them up. But many of these criminals got charged and they were released back on the street, right?”
“You are absolutely right. One case I looked at, Lawrence, one case, there is a child rape, he was released two years ago without honoring our detainer. It took us two years for finding this person,” Homan responded. “So how many children did he attack over the last two years? All we are asking for is to let our agents in the jail where you lock somebody up and let us arrest them there when you are done with them, rather than release them back in the public and making a public safety issue out of it.”
Earlier in the appearance, Homan reminded Jones that during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, he had vowed to go after illegal immigrants in Boston.
“Boston, I said at CPAC they’re the sanctuary state, and we are going to come and, despite their sanctuary status, we’re going to bring agents there, we’re going to take these worst of the worst off the street,” Homan told Jones.

Adams appeared with Trump administration border czar Tom Homan on “Fox and Friends” on Feb. 14, where they announced that U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement would operate at Riker’s Island. Wu, though, has doubled down on Boston’s status as a “sanctuary city,” according to the New York Post.
ICE arrested over 350 illegal immigrants during a sweep in Boston, Newsweek reported. The agency has captured multiple sex offenders released by Massachusetts authorities despite the agency requesting they be detained for deportation in the past.
In June 2024, ICE agents arrested a 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala who had been released on bail after being charged with raping a child in Bristol County. ICE also took an illegal immigrant from the Cape Verde Islands repeatedly convicted on public lewdness charges into custody in April 2024.
