A fast-moving winter storm is expected to sweep across the Northeast on Sunday, bringing significant snowfall and creating widespread travel disruptions.
The storm will impact major metropolitan areas from Washington, D.C., to Boston, with snowfall beginning Sunday morning and continuing into Sunday night.
Major Impacts:
- Snow Accumulation: The Interstate 95 corridor, including Washington, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, is expected to see 3-6 inches of snow. Heavier amounts, possibly reaching 1 foot, could fall in the mountains of New England and parts of the Poconos and Catskill Mountains.
- Travel Impacts: Slippery roads, low visibility, and delays are anticipated on major highways and at airports. Flight cancellations and deicing delays are likely at Northeast hubs.
- NFL Playoff Impact: Snowfall is expected in Philadelphia ahead of the NFL playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field, potentially affecting visibility and playing conditions.

The storm will follow a surge of Arctic air that is set to move into the region late Saturday, creating ideal conditions for snow. This marks the first major snowstorm of the season for much of the I-95 corridor, which has experienced below-average snowfall this winter.
“This will likely end up being the first general snowstorm for the Interstate 95 corridor for the mid-Atlantic and New England,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines.
Snowfall rates could reach up to three-quarters of an inch per hour in areas such as Philadelphia and Boston, making roads hazardous and reducing visibility.
Meteorologists are monitoring the storm’s rapid development, which could meet the criteria for a “bomb cyclone.” This occurs when a storm’s central pressure drops 24 millibars or more within 24 hours. Should this happen, the storm would produce powerful winds that could exacerbate travel disruptions and lead to power outages.

The storm will usher in the coldest air of the winter season, with temperatures plummeting across the eastern United States. Conditions are expected to freeze areas left wet or slushy by the storm, creating treacherous conditions through the middle of the week.
The intense cold, which originates from Siberia, is expected to persist well into next week, with harsh winds making it feel even colder. Organizers of the presidential inauguration on Monday have moved the ceremony indoors due to the extreme conditions.
AccuWeather meteorologists are also monitoring additional winter storms brewing in the Southern U.S. These systems could track up the Atlantic coast next week, potentially bringing more snow and ice to the Northeast.
Travelers are urged to check weather updates and prepare for significant delays. Motorists should exercise caution on icy roads, and those attending outdoor events should dress warmly and limit time spent outside.
