Authorities have discovered a body suspected to be that of Joseph Couch, the man accused of shooting and injuring five people on Interstate 75 in Kentucky earlier this month. The discovery ends an intense search that had kept residents on edge for days.

Accessories found with the body, including an Army-style duffel bag with “Couch” written on it, strongly suggest the deceased is the suspected shooter. The body was found in the same rugged terrain where the September 7th attack took place, near the city of London.

The highway shooting caused significant disruption, forcing schools to close and implement virtual learning for several days. Authorities had warned residents to remain vigilant, and schools reopened with increased police presence only recently.

Couch is accused of firing 20 to 30 rounds near an interstate exit, hitting a dozen vehicles and injuring five people. Before the attack, he allegedly sent a text message threatening to “kill a lot of people” and then kill himself.

Searchers had previously found Couch’s abandoned vehicle and a semi-automatic weapon believed to be the one used in the shooting.
