HARDEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Hardee County (DOH-Hardee) is warning the public about the presence of blue-green algae in the Peace River at Wauchula and Pioneer Park Boat Ramp.
Water samples are being tested, but blue-green algae can produce toxins, so caution is advised even before test results are confirmed.
What are Blue-Green Algae?

Blue-green algae are bacteria common in Florida’s freshwater. Blooms occur when algae grow rapidly, discoloring the water and often forming mats with unpleasant odors. Some blue-green algae produce toxins harmful to humans, pets, and wildlife.
Precautions
Residents and visitors are advised to:
- Avoid drinking, swimming, wading, or using personal watercraft in areas with visible blooms.
- Wash skin and clothing with soap and water after contact with algae or discolored/smelly water.
- Keep pets and livestock away from the affected water.
- Do not cook or clean dishes with contaminated water.
- Do not eat shellfish from affected waters. Fish fillets from healthy fish are safe if rinsed and cooked thoroughly.
