A leftist group in Maryland called the Caucus of African American Leaders of Anne Arundel County, or CAAL, wants to rename the recently destroyed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Why? Because Key, the author of “The Star Spangled Banner,” was a racist.

CAAL argues that in penning America’s national anthem, Key “demeaned black people.” Not only that, he was a slaveholder.

CAAL has pushed Democratic Gov. Wes Moore, a black far-left liberal himself, and the state legislature to rename the bridge for the late Parren Mitchell. Mitchell, of Baltimore, was the first black Marylander elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

On Facebook on Sunday, a CAAL representative noted, “This is not the first time that the Caucus of African American Leaders has brought to the attention of the public that taxpayer’s dollars were being used to honor racism.”

Key “was an enslaver,” the post continued.

The author also noted, without citing the source, that Key once wrote that blacks were “a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experiences prove to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community.”

“If we are going to make America better and not bitter, we must be willing to challenge the status quo,” the post added.

When reporters asked him about the drive to erase Francis Scott Key, Moore replied, “I think any other conversations along those lines, there will be time for that, but now’s not the time.”

Not exactly a resounding endorsement of retaining Key’s name for the bridge.

And CAAL may be rightly confident that the heavily Democratic state government in Maryland will surrender to its demands.

In its Facebook post, the group noted, “Suffice it to say, we are going to go forward despite [possible opposition]. … When those naysayers said Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday would never be a holiday, Nelson Mandela would never be released from prison, Barack Obama would never be president, and our own Governor Wes Moore would never be elected governor in the state of Maryland, we responded with ‘just watch us.’”
