Algerian boxer Imane Khelif secured a swift victory against Angela Carini, an Italian woman, in their opening Olympic bout. The fight lasted a mere 46 seconds.
Khelif’s win has reignited controversy surrounding her eligibility to compete in the women’s welterweight category.
Khelif was previously disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing a gender eligibility test due to elevated testosterone levels. Despite this, the trans woman was cleared to participate in the Olympics after reportedly meeting the revised eligibility criteria set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The quick conclusion of the fight following the brutal punch and Carini quitting after less than a minute has fueled further debate.

Some argue that Khelif’s physical attributes, influenced by her elevated testosterone, give her an unfair advantage.
Others defend her right to compete, stating that the trans woman has met the necessary requirements and should not be discriminated against.
The controversy has even drawn criticism from a UN official, who expressed concerns about the safety and fairness of allowing Khelif to compete against other women. The Algerian Olympic Committee has defended Khelif, stating she has been unfairly targeted and her dignity attacked.
