A bill has been filed in the Florida Senate that would pave the way for the creation of a state-run Black history museum in St. Johns County. Senator Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach, filed SB 466 on Monday, following a recommendation from a task force last year.

The bill proposes the establishment of a Florida Museum of Black History Board of Directors, which would collaborate with the Foundation for the Museum of Black History, Inc., a non-profit organization, to develop the museum.

The St. Johns County Commission would provide staff support to the board during the planning, design, and engineering phases.

The museum would be located at the former site of Florida Memorial University, west of St. Augustine. Senator Leek, whose district includes St. Johns County, filed the bill for consideration during the upcoming legislative session, which begins on March 4th.
