Shannon Estenoz, a Key West native whose current duties include helping oversee federal Everglades restoration efforts, was nominated Thursday by President Joe Biden to become deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the White House announced.
Estenoz is currently the department’s assistant secretary for fish and wildlife, overseeing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the Office of Everglades Restoration Initiatives.

Her previous roles included serving as the department’s director of Everglades restoration initiatives and as a member of the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board.
The nomination for the deputy secretary post requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
