President Joe Biden, speaking at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) office in New Hampshire on Tuesday, stated that the party needs to “lock up” former President Donald Trump, before adding that he meant it in a political sense. The comment comes amid a close 2024 race and ongoing legal battles involving Trump.
Since 2019, Democrats have often called for Trump’s incarceration, echoing previous Republican chants aimed at former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

While addressing the DNC in Concord, Biden referenced Trump’s growing legal issues, accusing the former president of believing he is immune to accountability for threats. Trump is currently facing four criminal indictments related to election interference and mishandling classified documents.
“All of it’s on a knife’s edge. It’s on a knife’s edge right now. So this is really, really, really, really important right now. Folks, look, think about it. He is talking about doing away with the entire Department of Education — he means it, this is not a joke. This is a guy who also wants to replace every civil servant, every single one,” Biden said.
“Thinks he has a right under the Supreme Court ruling on immunity, to be able if need be, if [it were] the case, to actually eliminate — physically eliminate, shoot, kill — someone who he believes to be a threat to him. So, I know this sounds bizarre. It sounds like if I said this five years ago, you’d lock me up. We gotta lock him up,” Biden said as the crowd applauded. “Politically lock him up. Lock him out, that’s what we have to do.”

Despite special prosecutor Jack Smith pushing for Trump’s election interference trial to occur before the 2024 election, Judge Tanya Chutkan set a pretrial schedule that ensures the trial will not begin before then.
Republicans have criticized Democrats for their rhetoric against Trump, especially after an assassination attempt on Trump’s life on July 13.
Since Trump took office in 2016, some Democrats and media outlets have labeled him a fascist, Nazi, or likened him to Hitler, intensifying political divisions.
