During their meeting on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to take action to stop the production of fentanyl and reestablish military communication, according to the Associated Press.
The outcomes, which were anticipated prior to the negotiations, represent advancements in mending the still-tense US-China relationship.
However, the leaders did not issue a joint statement or formal proclamation.

Biden made it apparent during the summit—which came to an end after nearly four hours—that China should pressure Iran to prevent actions that would worsen the already unstable Middle East situation.
In addition, the leaders expressed a desire to restore stability to their nations’ relations following several months of heightened hostilities.
“Mr. President, we’ve known each other for a long time. We haven’t always agreed, which was not a surprise to anyone, but our meetings have always been candid, straightforward, and useful. I’ve never doubted what you’ve told me in terms of your candid nature in which you speak,” Biden said. “I value our conversation because I think it’s paramount that you and I understand each other clearly, leader to leader, with no misconceptions or miscommunication.”
“The China-U.S. relationship, which is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, should be perceived and envisioned in a broad context of the — of the accelerating global transformations unseen in a century. It should develop in a way that benefits our two peoples and fulfills our responsibility for human progress,” XI said.
“China-U.S. relationship has never been smooth sailing over the past 50 years and more, and it always faces problems of one kind or another. Yet, it has kept moving forward amid twists and turns,” Xi said.
“I’ve just concluded a day of meetings with President Xi, and I believe they were some of the most constructive and productive discussions we’ve had,” he tweeted. “We built on groundwork laid over the past several months of diplomacy between our countries and made important progress.”
A China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson who attended today’s summit posted to X that Xi said the “Taiwan question” remains the “most sensitive issue” in U.S.-China relations.
“The U.S. side should take real actions to honor its commitment of not supporting ‘Taiwan independence’, stop arming Taiwan, and support China’s peaceful reunification,” said Hua Chunying, assistant minister of foreign affairs and a spokesperson. “China will realize reunification, and this is unstoppable.”
