Florida’s beautiful beaches are a popular spot for celebrating the Fourth of July, but they’re also vital nesting grounds for sea turtles and shorebirds. This year, let’s share the sand responsibly and help ensure a successful nesting season!

Here’s how you can be a holiday hero:

  • Give Wildlife Space:
    • Walk around flocks of birds, not through them. Aim for at least 300 feet.
    • Keep your distance from nesting sea turtles (at least 50 feet). Watch out for camouflaged chicks and eggs.
    • Respect posted nesting areas and Critical Wildlife Areas (CWAs). Avoid loud noises near CWAs.
  • Leave No Trace:
    • Dispose of trash properly before sunset. Fill in holes you dig.
    • Remove beach furniture and toys to avoid obstacles for nesting turtles and hatchlings.
    • Recycle fishing line at link to monofilament recycling stations.
  • Minimize Light Pollution:
    • Turn off lights or close curtains at night to avoid confusing nesting turtles and hatchlings.
    • Use minimal light on the beach at night (no flashlights or flash photography).
  • Skip the Fireworks:
    • Leave fireworks to the professionals and attend official displays. Fireworks disrupt nesting wildlife.
  • Keep Pets on Leash:
    • Leave your dog at home if possible, or keep it leashed and away from wildlife.
